Here we cross one of the ancient hedge lines. The oak to the left is
about 250 years old, and a line of similarly large oaks can be seen
behind it standing on a raised earth bank. The tree on the right is a
hornbeam Carpinus betulus. Hornbeam wood is extremely hard and
used to
be used for gear wheels, for example in clock mechanisms.
